Updates: Jimmy Borges, ‘Hairspray,’ Loretta Ables Sayre

July 27th, 2011

Five quick-hit graphs to bring you up to date about current haps:

Jimmy Borges, who had a grapefruit-sized tumor removed from his liver, was released from Kaiser Hospital today (Wednesday July 27) and is home.
He was totally “unplugged,” meaning no more IVs the past few days, handling three square meals daily, said wife Vicki.
First "public" thing Borges did: Got on the phone with Roy Sakuma, organizer of the "Wildest Show in Town" this evening at Honolulu Zoo, where the jazz crooner was to perform but had to bail out because of his impending surgery. His pal Shari Lynn stepped in to kokua; the crowd went wild; Borges was touched. Details forthcoming.
Get well, Jeremiah; everyone’s rooting for you. ...

“Hairspray” is a hoot at Diamond Head Theatre; the sellout of regular performances prodded the addition of two more shows: 8 p.m. Aug. 13 and 4 p.m. Aug. 14. Stacey Pulmano is Tracy, the plus-sized teen with big hair, and Randl Ask is Edna Turnblad, the equally plus-sized mom. Check if seats remain at 733-0274. ...

Loretta Ables Sayre, who is rehearsing to recreate her Bloody Mary role from her Broadway “South Pacific” for a European audience, has fallen in love — with London.
Loves the weather (“from the upper 50s at night to the lower mid-70s in the day ...equal amounts of rainy and not quite sunny days”), the city (“London is one of the most, if not THE most bautify city, I have ever been in”), the architecture and flora/fauna (“beautiful stone or brick buildings with iron work and window oxes filled with brightly blooming flowers everywhere”). She’s e-mailed her impressions after two weeks of sight-seeing and rehearsals. But the traffic and drivers on the other side of the car, tooling in the “wrong” lane, baffle her. We’ll share more impressions in a future blog. Oh, she’s having a blast, with eyes wide open — and watching the autos and buses wheeling from every which way. ...

The Babooze Brothers, meaning comics Augie T and Frank DeLima, are hitting the road: Aug. 5 at Don the Beachcomber in Huntington Beach; Aug. 6 at Portuguese Hall, San Diego; Aug. 12, Cannery Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas; Aug. 19, Clover Park Technical College, Seattle; Sept. 2, Molokai Paddlers Inn, Kaunakakai; Sept. 17, Hana Hotel, Maui; Sept. 23, Lanai Community Gym; Sept. 30, Honokaa People’s Theater, Honokaa, Big Island; and Oct. 30, Akebono Theater, Pahoa, Big Island. ...

Jake Shimabukuro may now be known (along with kid bro Bruce) mostly as the spokesman for Farmers Insurance — a smart win-win move for the entertainer and the company — but don’t forget that he’s the ukulele strummer whose hypnotic “Amazing Grace” ditty underscores a touching video ... a charity effort for Unite for Japan ... to kokua the folks still struggling in the aftermath of the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disasters. Shimabukuro is in good company — John Legend, Ellen DeGeneres, Apolo Ohno, Katy Perry, Matt Damon, Cameron Diaz, John Travolta, Masi Oka, Mark Wahlberg, Paula Abdul, Leonardo DiCarpio and Clint Eastwood are among those featured. Actor Ken Watanabe produced the video. Go to: or ...
