Let him roar: O'Loughlin kid's name is Lion

Lion is the name Alex O'Loughlin and girlfriend Malia Jones have chosen for their bouncing baby boy.
The tot was born Oct. 25 in Honolulu.
O'Loughlin, who plays Steve McGarrett in the Island-filmed CBS procedural,"Hawaii Five-0," also has a son, Saxon, 15, and Jones also has a son, Spike, 3, from previous relationships.
There was no explanation on why the couple named their son Lion. Did he roar like a Leo? Was in the inspiration from "The Lion King"?
Lion joins a growing roster of celebrities with kids with odd names.
Samples:
Ocean, son of actor Forest Whitaker.
Tu, son of actor Rob Morrow. (Tu-Morrow, get it?)
Apple, daughter of Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin.
Prime and Blanket, sons of Michael Jackson.
Blue, daughter of Beyonce and Jay-Z.
Egypt, son of Alicia Keys.
Moon and Diva, daughters, and Dweezil and Ahmet, sons, of Frank Zappa.
And then there's the brood of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The girls are named Shilo and Vivienne; the boys are Zahara, Maddox, Shiloh, Pax and Knox.
What's your take on these out-of-the-box oddities?

There are NUMEROUS mistakes in this "article"--if you care.

    1. Actor Rob Morrow's child, Tu, is a DAUGHTER, not a son as you've written.

    2. Michael Jackson's sons are PRINCE & Blanket--& actually they're named Prince Michael Jackson I & Prince Michael Jackson II, respectively. The nickname "Blanket" for the younger son is obviously to avoid confusion.

    3. You've COMPLETELY screwed up BOTH the names AND genders of the Jolie-Pitt children: They have 6 children--3 boys & 3 girls. The BOYS are Maddox, Pax & Knox (1 of the twins); the GIRLS are Zahara (whom you referred to as a boy), Shiloh (whom you referred to as BOTH a boy & a girl... with a MISSPELLED name, when you called her a girl), & Vivienne (the other of the twins)!

Whatever happened to ACCURACY in journalism?? SERIOUSLY.

As for Mr. O'Loughlin & Ms. Jones, they may name their child(ren) ANYTHING they want to, as far as I'm concerned. It won't change the fact that I am a LOYAL fan of Hawaii Five-0 & will remain so as long as it's on the air.

Blanket is a nick name: his real name is Prince Michael Joseph Jackson, II. His brother's name is Prince Michael Joseph Jackson.

I guess Bear (Alicia Silverstone) was taken. :-) We knew it was going to be a strange name, and not just merely unique, but I was surprised at just how odd. I think with some of the names you mentioned in your column that there is an attention-getting, ego aspect to these choices, and/or the desire to predetermine a desirable personality characteristic on a child.

  4. Alpha11:

Lion is a great name. It means strength tempered by gentleness. What better name for a man. Congrats to the whole family!

Alpha11, what would your childhood have been like being named Lion? Don't you think you would have been ridiculed and embarrassed and felt your name was a burden? I'll bet as an adult, you're glad it's not your name. I'll probably get attacked from all the AOL folks, but the author (I realize not the parents) of the column asked for opinions, and this is mine.

Wayne, is it actually being pronounced Lie-un, like the cat? Or, are they pronouncing it Le-Own, like the French city? I do see it's spelled like the cat, but maybe the pronunciation is as different as the name itself. Haha--wondered if this event coulda begun on the French trip over the xmas holidays. Anyway, thanks for the update.
