Last week's TV ratings: Pro Bowl led sports, 'NCIS' tops dramas

I’m often asked how CBS’ “Hawaii Five-0” ranks in the weekly Nielsen ratings; in this blog, we’ve dealt mainly with the ranking in the 9 p.m. (10 p.m. Mainland) time slot on Mondays.
For the few of you who’ve asked/wondered about the overall picture, here’s the Top 20 network shows last week.
Local footnotes: NBC’s Pro Bowl coverage last weekend attracted 12.2 million viewers (Henry Kapono was the halftime attraction), good for a No. 4 ranking; the pre-game show, led by Train (“Hey, Soul Sister”) and supported by ukulele students from Roy Sakuma’s Ukulele Studios along with several local hula halau, was No. 19 with a 9.3 million viewership; "Five-0" was No. 18.

  1. fans are too defensive:

Thank you, Wayne. I am much more comfortable with facts than I am talking about actors/people. A lot less drama.

OK. Let's take a good look at these numbers. First of all, Revolution is away and the series Deception that took its place is flopping horribly. If Revolution was showing right now, I am positive H50's ratings would be back to 7-8 million and off this chart.
H50 had a new episode and yet comparable procedural shows, like NCIS, NCIS:LA and Person of Interest, even with reruns, did better than H50. The Mentalist is on the lousy Sunday night, had a million viewers more than H50. So even the rerun shows on more competitive nights, with much stronger competition, did better.

If all the shows were showing original episodes, and the big shows weren't doing reruns, H50 might also very well be off of this chart. Remember, this is a snapshot of one week.

More interesting to me will be when Revolution returns and Castle, H50 and Revolution all have original episodes on at the same time. That will tell us whether the 9-10 million viewers H50 jumped up to from 7-8 million in the fall were new faithful viewers of H50 OR viewers who are biding their time waiting for Revolution's return and they will jump back over to Revolution or stay with H50.

Deception is likely to be canceled:

Having said that, it is the demo that means more than the # of viewers. H50 had a meager demo of 2.2 that week.

  2. fans are too defensive:

I love comparing numbers! Forgot to mention that CSI was new also and had over 11 million viewers. But now I went back and painstakingly (LOL) checked the demos of all new episodes of procedural shows on this chart for the week cited here to see how the DEMO compared with H50's new episode. I didn't bother with the repeats.

    For CBS:

CSI: a solid demo for a drama of 2.6

Criminal Minds: an awesome demo of 3.0

The Mentalist: 1.8 (it slid 3 tenths of a point (2.1)from its last original episode)

    H50: 2.2

You might say to look at The Mentalist. It is doing worse than H50 in the demo. Yes, although actually it usually is comparable to H50 as they have averaged pretty evenly throughout the season.

But The Mentalist is in its 5th season and CBS moved them to Sunday night because they have their TNT syndication deal done and if it gets canceled CBS is happy. I imagine so are the actors because they get money also from syndication.

It was still going very strong in its 3rd season and its 4th, and was on the most competitive night of TV: Thursday. H50 has always had weak competition and still can't maintain a good demo. It is dropping already in the third season.

CBS wants that TNT deal for it and I hope/think they will at least start season 4 in the hopes that it holds its own until 88 episodes where syndication can kick in. But it needs to get higher ratings to continue after season 4, IMO.

    Just for comparison's sake:

The Following on FOX got a 3.2 rating for their season premiere the week of this chart and it rose this week to 3.3. It is rare for a show to rise after a premiere so this looks like it is off to a great start.
